Public consultation is now open on options to introduce Disclosure of Origin requirements in the current Patents regime.
A Disclosure of Origin requirement would require patent applicants to include the origin of any genetic resources and/or traditional knowledge used in their inventions. This was a recommendation of the Waitangi Tribunal’s Wai 262 report, and is being considered in line with a review of the Plant Variety Rights Act 1987.
The consultation period will run from 17 September to 21 December 2018 and includes regional hui for discussion and engagement with Māori.
There is also a related consultation on a review of the Plant Variety Rights Act 1987.
