New Zealand Plant Variety Rights Journal

The NZ PVR Journal contains information that the Commissioner is required, by the Plant Variety Rights Act 1987 and the Plant Variety Rights Act 2022, to publish. This includes notice of every decision to make or decline a grant, and all prescribed particulars relating to applications and grants, so as to inform people who may wish to lodge formal objections.

The Commissioner can also publish any other information relating to plant varieties or plant variety rights in general.

The Journal is published quarterly and has two sections:

1. Online section about applications and grants

The PVR online Journal section contains:

  1. Applications for Protection
  2. Variety Denomination Proposals
  3. A) Withdrawal of applications - A voluntary action by the owner to withdraw an application
    B) Lapse of Application - A formal action by the Office to end an application
  4. Decisions
    A) PVR granted
    B) PVR refused
  5. Changes of owner or designated contact
  6. A) PVR Surrender - Voluntary termination of grant by the owner
    B) PVR Cancellation
    D)     PVR Expiry - The termination of the prescribed term of a grant
  7. Correction of error - Lists formal and administrational errors corrected by either the system or the Commissioner
  8. PVR Renewal - Lists all varieties with grant renewed in the last quarter
  9. Confirmed denominations - Accepted denomination change for a granted variety

2. General Information section in pdf format

This section contains:

  • Closing dates for applications for certain species
  • Plant Variety Rights Office developments
  • Information with respect to international plant variety right developments e.g. new UPOV member states
  • Publication of articles relevant to plant variety rights in New Zealand
  • Notices of change to or reminders regarding administrative or technical practice.
